My JEFFERY ancestors lived on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of Hampshire, England for at least several generations before immigrating to Prince Edward Island, Canada in the early 1800s.
I wish to give praise and credit to Betty JEFFERY, my distant cousin who has actually traveled to the Isle of Wight and looked at a lot of records there, and published a book on her family history with her cousin Carter JEFFERY. An invaluable body of work. They have access to an old family bible and have found wills dating back to the 1600s.
The oldest ancestor they have found is Richard JEFFERY, Yeoman of Nettlestone Farm in St Helen's parish in the Isle of Wight. He was likely born about 1638. According to his will dated 16 Mar 1685/6, Richard was married to Mary, and had 5 children with another on the way. As the will was proved in May, one wonders if Richard lived to see his next child born?
