ANDREW Family Heritage
Harry Charles ANDREW and
Nell (RICHARDSON)
Claudia's mother was Mabel Marion ANDREW, born on the family farm in North St Eleanors, Prince Edward Island (PEI) Canada in 1918, the second of seven children born to Harry Charles ANDREW and Eleanor Louise "Nell" RICHARDSON. Although Harry was the youngest of 9 children, he was the one who took over the running of the farm when his father William ANDREW became ill. During World War II, a new RCAF Base absorbed nearly all of the North St Eleanors district near Summerside, including Harry and Nell's farm of about 100 acres. No longer tied to the land, most of the family moved to the west coast of Canada after the war, exchanging one small Prince Edward Island in the Atlantic for a much larger and rugged Vancouver Island, British Columbia (BC) in the Pacific. They settled in the Cowichan Valley close to COMPTON relatives. Mabel remained in the Duncan BC area for the rest of her life, never returning to PEI.
Mabel's grandfather, William ANDREW was born 1848 in North St Eleanors, PEI, and he married Harriet Washbourne COMPTON, another native of St Eleanors PEI, in 1870.
William's father, Charles ANDREW, was the one who emigrated from England just weeks after he married Mary HOPGOOD in Stratton, Cornwall in 1842. Charles arrived in PEI with his wife and small daughter and took up farming. The ANDREW line came from the small town of Kilkhampton on the north coast of Cornwall England very near the Devon border. Charles's father was another William ANDREW, a farmer who married Honour GRIGG from Kilkhampton in 1807 and raised seven children there.

We have not been able to determine this William's birth and parentage with certainty, but we do have theories. He was likely born about 1781 or 1782 based on his age at death, but there are no such baptism records for him in Kilkhampton. So where did he come from? At one time (and based only on family stories), we thought that his father was another William, but there was no further evidence. Others have suggested William's father's name might have been Thomas, perhaps based on the names of William's children. So who were his parents?
In collaboration with another ANDREW researcher (thank you Leigh!), I have learned that in this timeframe, there was a William and Elizabeth ANDREW "of Holsworthy" renting a farm and windmill called Lymsworthy (also known as Langford*) from the Grenville family, about a mile and a half outside Kilkhampton. Although Holsworthy is in Devon, it is only about 10 miles away from Kilkhampton, which is very near the Devon border. Although I have been unable to find the land tenancy records myself to confirm these claims, this is the most promising lead we've had. Especially as the gravestone in Kilkhampton of our William (who married Honour Grigg) says that he was "Late of Langford in this Parish"! So if the facts can be confirmed, this would link my William ANDREW to William and Elizabeth of Lymsworthy, and potentially to their ANDREW ancestors and relatives in the Holsworthy Devon area.
[* Looking at an ordnance map of this area, there are two neighbouring farms, now called "Lymsworthy Old Farmhouse" and "Langford", both a short distance southeast of Kilkhampton village. A further short distance northeast of Langford there is also East Langford and East Langford Farm (to the southeast of Lower Tamar Lake near Thurdon). Ref - https://www.walklakes.co.uk/os50k_190.html ]
Looking in the existing Devon parish records, the most promising candidate seems to be a William ANDREW, son of William and Elizabeth, baptised 19 Dec 1784 in Thornbury Devon (very near Holsworthy and a short distance east of Kilkhampton - see above map). This couple had 3 other children there: Elizabeth 1782, John 1787, and Grace 1793. I found a marriage for a William ANDREW and Elizabeth COLE in Milton Damerel, the parish immediately north of Thornbury; they were married on 3 Nov (or Dec) 1779 according to 2 different indexed transcriptions.
And if I may be so bold as to tentatively look back another generation, there is a baptism record in Thornbury for a William ANDREW on 26 Mar 1750, son of Thomas ANDREW and Martha. There are a number of other children baptised for this couple between 1747 and 1764 in both Thornbury and nearby Cookbury. And there was a marriage of a Thomas ANDREW and Martha COLE on 4 May 1747 in Thornbury Devon. So did both father and son marry into the COLE family?

RELATED LINES
As to the women who married these generations of ANDREW men, much is known about the RICHARDSON, COMPTON, GRIGG and CORNISH lines, so separate pages have been dedicated to these family tree branches. As for Mary HOPGOOD, her father's name was given as William HOPGOOD in her marriage record, but we haven't traced him yet. There was a John HOPGOOD living in Kilkhampton Cornwall around that time who may have been Mary's uncle or relative, but that's all we know so far about her family.
Both the GRIGG and especially the CORNISH lines extend further back, sideways and forward in a virtual maze of relatives and interconnections, making it extremely interesting to research.
