ROBSON Genealogy
Terry's paternal BOORMAN tree includes the surname ROBSON because his great-grandfather William Scoons BOORMAN married Frances Jane "Fanny" ROBSON in Wandsworth, Surrey England in 1865. They were non-conformists. The couple raised seven children there before most (if not all) of them emigrated in the 1890s to Victoria, BC, Canada and area. Terry's grandfather was their youngest son, Harry Eustace BOORMAN (1881-1951), who married Daisy Louise JOHNSTON in Vancouver BC in 1910.
Fanny ROBSON had been born in 1844 in Chatham, Medway, Kent, the daughter of James ROBSON and Eliza STIGANT, and the third of their eight children. James was a tailor, working as an army clothier in Wandsworth in 1861. But I haven't been able to trace them further forward and cannot find their deaths. I know that at least three of their children (Fanny, William and Fred), emigrated with their families to the west coast of Canada, primarily in the Gulf Islands and Victoria BC.
James ROBSON was the son of Matthews ROBSON and Frances GOUGE, who were married in Chatham Kent in 1809. They produced six children and died in the Medway District. Matthew was a Shipwright in 1839 when his son James was married. But in 1841 he was listed as a baker. That census also says that Matthew was born about 1781 or earlier, but NOT in Kent. The question remains: then where? Did he get is shipwright training is some other coastal seaport area before moving to Medway, or did he move when he was younger with his family?
The name ROBSON is not uncommon, and often confused with other names like Robinson or Robertson etc., so has proved challenging to research.

To summarize, Terry's direct paternal ROBSON line has only been traced back to 1781 in the Medway area of Kent, England:
- Parents: William Irvine "Bill" BOORMAN (1911 - 1966) married Lillian "Joyce" THOMAS (1918 - 2006) in Victoria BC, Canada
- Grandparents: Harry Eustace BOORMAN (1881 - 1951) married Daisy Louise JOHNSTON (1887 - 1961) in Vancouver BC, Canada
- 1G Grandparents: Frances Jane ROBSON (1844 - 1924) married William Scoons BOORMAN (1842 - 1909) in Wandsworth, Surrey, England
- 2G Grandparents: James ROBSON (1816- ) married Eliza STIGANT (1816- ) in Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, England in 1839
- 3G Grandparents: Matthew ROBSON (1781-1847?) married Frances GOUGE (1785-1857) in Chatham, Kent, England in 1809
We have not yet published a separate ROBSON tree, but more details on the later ROBSON names can be found in our BOORMAN tree.

STIGANT & DAVIS Genealogy
Eliza STIGANT (1816- ) who married James ROBSON was the daughter of William STIGANT (1764-1837) and his second wife Susanna DAVIS (c1785- ), the fourth of their eight children. They too lived in the Chatham and surrounding parishes in Kent's Medway district. William worked as a shipwright as did many in this area. His first marriage was to Mary FURNER (1767-1806) in 1787 in Chatham, and they had seven children.
We currently believe that William was the son of Edward STIGANT (c1735-1774?) and Mary SMITH (c1738-), the third of their six children. They were married in Chatham in 1759. These families are based on minimal evidence; very little is known about them and we haven't been able to locate any earlier generations.
Nothing more is known yet about Susanna DAVIS's ancestors. That's a very common surname.

GOUGE & HART Genealogy
Frances GOUGE who married Matthew ROBSON in 1809 in Chatham, was born in 1785 probably in Kingsdown, Kent, England, the 4th of 12 children. Her parents were Robert GOUGE (1756-1839) and Frances HART (c1757-1837) who married in Newington Kent in 1778. They raised their twelve children in Kingsdown near Sittingbourne, Kent and then Borden Kent, where they both died. Robert's gravestone in Borden lists him as a yeoman and conveniently provides the names of his 11 surviving children.
We also know from Robert's baptismal records that he was the son of Robert Gouge Sr and Mary. Mary was buried in 1793 in Borden, and Robert Sr likely followed her in 1797. Based only on other baptism records, be believe Robert was the oldest of at least six children baptised between 1756 and 1783. But as there is a gap of 15 years between Robert and the next oldest child, this assumption may be premature. There could have been another wife involved, or perhaps the records haven't survived for a middle grouping of children. Or perhaps this is 2 different families. More research is required.
